It's not that you don't understand marketing; it's that your posts are too ordinary | Marcus Ng

Jul 27, 2026

Did you know?

People scrolling through social media encounter an average of over a thousand pieces of content every day.

And the time they are willing to spend on any one piece is probably only 2 seconds.

In other words—your post isn't disliked, it's "ignored."

This article isn't about teaching you how to master algorithms,

but rather to let you know: On social media, design itself is a marketing language.

1. Your posts are too much like "templates"

Do you remember the excitement of using Canva for the first time?

You apply a beautiful template, change the text, and it looks like a real designer's work.

But now… everyone is using the same templates.

The problem is—

When everyone looks the same, no one remembers you.

The key is not templates, but a sense of style.

Mini exercise:

  • Change the template colors to your brand's representative colors.
  • Try varying the fonts (main font + secondary font).
  • Delete half the information, keeping only "one line that makes people want to stop."

Just a few simple steps, and you can go from "ordinary" to "memorable."

2. Your posts are "talking about yourself" instead of "talking about the reader"

Many brands' first sentence in their posts is:

Our product is so and so...

But the audience's usual reaction is:

What does that have to do with me?

In the social media world, the essence of marketing is not "selling," but "resonance."

So the beginning of your post should be more like:

Have you ever had this experience?

Spending a lot of time creating posts, but no one interacts?

This conversational opening will automatically make people stay and read the second line.

Tip:

  • Start with words like "you," "would you like," "do you often."
  • End with a small interactive sentence: "Tell me in the comments if you feel this way too!"

This is the warmth of a post.

3. Visuals are part of marketing, not just packaging

Your posts don't have to be fancy, but they must have a clear focus.

Don't put too many words, don't cram too many images.

Because visual clutter is like saying:

"Even I'm not sure what I want you to see."

To make people stop scrolling, you need to make them understand the main point in one second.

Practical small strategies:

  1. Each post conveys only one concept.
  2. Use white space (negative space) to create rhythm.
  3. High-contrast color block designs are more eye-catching than complex patterns.

4. Don't chase trends, cultivate "your own style"

You can refer to others' designs, but don't become their shadow.

Small brands are remembered not by templates, but by "consistency."

Try to think:

  • Which three colors can represent your posts?
  • Can the fonts be fixed to two? (Title + content)
  • Can people instantly recognize "this is your brand"?

That is a **"silent brand identity."**

As you design more, you'll find: "Professional" isn't necessarily flashy, but stable.

5. The last mile to make your posts "speak"

The most powerful social media design isn't about being perfectly beautiful, but about "understanding people."

It makes people laugh, makes them like, makes them want to share.

Try asking yourself a few questions:

  • What feeling do I want people to have from this post?
  • After reading it, will they want to do something?

That is truly effective design.

Because social media isn't about how great you are,

but about who understands "why people stop."

✨ Conclusion | Give your posts "attitude"

If you are building a brand, starting a business, or just beginning to create a personal image,

please remember this:

It's not that you don't understand marketing; it's that your posts are too ordinary.

When you add a little more thought and a little more style to your posts,

people will linger a little longer, like it a little more, and trust it a little more.

Design is never just icing on the cake,

it is the key tool to get you seen.
